From h-d-y; hidāya (هِدَايَة), guidance. An active form: the One who guides in the present.
The reason
He guides on several levels: general guidance (the senses, the intelligence), prophetic guidance (the revealed messages), intimate guidance (the inspiration of the heart).
The Sufi meaning
One does not guide oneself to the Real; one is guided. All you can do is make yourself guidable: sincere, attentive, humble.
The servant's portion
Ask for guidance before all the rest. Ihdinā-ṣ-ṣirāṭa-l-mustaqīm — “Guide us upon the straight way”: the prayer one recites seventeen times a day.
