Name 86 / 100 · ✦ Plenitude
ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَام
Dhū-l-Jalāli wa-l-Ikrām
The Holder of Majesty and Generosity
In Him, majesty and beauty do not contradict each other — they coincide.
The tongue
Dhū, possessor of; al-jalāl (جَلَال), the majesty that inspires awe; al-ikrām, the generosity that honours. The Name says: He alone is both the one and the other.
The reason
In creatures, strength and gentleness are opposed. In Him, they are wedded: His majesty is generous, His generosity is majestic.
The Sufi meaning
It is the Name of the coincidence of opposites in God — a vertigo dear to the Sufis: neither hard nor soft, neither distant nor cloying, but both in their perfection.
The servant's portion
Cultivate within yourself jalāl (dignity, firmness) and ikrām (gentleness, generosity). The one without the other is disfigured.
