al-Wāḥid

The One

Unique, without associate or like.

The tongue
From w-ḥ-d; waḥda, unity. Wāḥid: the One who excludes multiplicity within His essence.
The reason
He has neither partner, nor part, nor like, nor equivalent. To think more than one is to step outside Him.
The Sufi meaning
Tawḥīd, the profession of unity, is the heart of the way: not a dogma to recite, but an experience to live — to see that nothing else has an existence of its own.
The servant's portion
Unify your heart: do not serve two masters, do not run in two directions, do not wear two faces.
