اَلْقَيُّوم
al-Qayyūm
The Self-Subsisting
Who stands by Himself and makes all the rest stand.
The tongue
From q-w-m; qiyām is to stand upright, to subsist. An intensive form: He subsists by Himself, and all the rest subsists by Him.
The reason
If His qayyūmiyya were interrupted for an instant, the universe would cease to be. The keeping-in-being is as miraculous as the bringing-into-being.
The Sufi meaning
Yā Ḥayy (اَلْحَيّ) yā Qayyūm is the invocation of moments of exhaustion: You who are living and who stand upright, hold me upright.
The servant's portion
Stand upright. And hold upright what threatens to fall around you.
