He who Gives Death

Master of the ultimate threshold.

The tongue

From m-w-t; mawt, death. A causative form: He makes die.

The reason

No creature dies without His decree. Death is not a failure of the system: it is part of it, by His ordinance.

The Sufi meaning

There is a death before death — death to the ego, fanāʾ (فَنَاء). Al-Mumīt is also the Name of this inner death that opens another life.

The servant's portion

Learn to die before dying: each day, to each false image of yourself, to each attachment that divides you. You will then die more freely.
