A reflexive form of ʿ-l-w; literally the One who exalts Himself above all analogy.

The reason

He surpasses not only the creatures, but every description one might form of Him. Tanzīh — transcendence — is the proper sense of this Name.

The Sufi meaning

When you believe you have understood God, recall al-Mutaʿālī: He is beyond what you have understood.

The servant's portion

Rise above the petty: do not waste your time in basenesses, aim higher than life pulls you.
