al-Wālī
The Governor
Who governs each thing with authority.
The tongue
The same root as al-Walī (اَلْوَلِيّ) (w-l-y), but inflected toward governance: the wālī is the governor of a province.
The reason
He governs the entire universe: not an event occurs outside His decree, not a leaf falls without Him.
The Sufi meaning
To recognise al-Wālī is to cease believing that one holds the reins. You do your part; the governing belongs to another.

Govern first your own kingdom — your body, your tongue, your heart. The rest will be added to you.
