اَلْكَبِير
al-Kabīr
The Infinitely Great
Greater than all, in all.
The tongue
From k-b-r; kibr (الكِبْر) is greatness; kabīr speaks essential greatness, not comparative.
The reason
All created greatness holds its greatness from Him. This is why the ritual invocation Allāhu akbar (اَللَّٰهُ أَكْبَر) does not mean “God is greater” — but “God is the Greatness.”
The Sufi meaning
When you say Allāhu akbar on entering prayer, you lay down at the door all the false greatnesses: your own, that of men, that of your cares.
The servant's portion
Do not make yourself great; there is only one Great.
