The tongue
From kh-b-r; khabar is news, true information. A faʿīl (فَعِيل) form: He knows through intimate experience, not by hearsay.

The Sufi meaning
Where al-ʿAlīm (اَلْعَلِيم) knows things, al-Khabīr knows their savour, their background, their hidden underside.
