اَلْبَاسِط
al-Bāsiṭ
He who Expands
Who enlarges the heart and extends grace.
The tongue
From b-s-ṭ: to extend, to unfold, to open the hand. The gesture inverse to qabḍ (قَبْض).
The reason
He extends subsistence, health, the horizon. He enlarges the narrow heart until it becomes vaster than the world.
The Sufi meaning
Al-Basṭ is the state in which the heart breathes widely, without care. It is the gift of the moment, not an acquisition — to alternate qabḍ and basṭ is the normal breathing of the wayfarer.
The servant's portion
When expansion comes, do not cling to it; when it departs, do not despair. Acknowledge that both hands are His.
