The gift precedes merit: before you existed, you had nothing that would justify being given being. Everything since is of this order.

The Sufi meaning

To recognise this Name is to cease believing that one has earned anything. Gratitude is no longer mere courtesy: it becomes vertigo.

Give without expecting — neither return, nor recognition, nor even to see yourself give.
